Hello was not the first thing people said on the telephone. The telephone was invented in 1876. Exactly one year later, on March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell first called his assistant. But he did not say hello. At that time he used the word 'ahoi' for greeting. The term was used for several period for telephone greetings.
